My name is Andrew Garvey and I’m obsessed with the balafon and the amazing music and culture that can be found all over west Africa. I first travelled to Senegal in 2012 when I discovered this amazing instrument on a drumming and dance retreat. I met an incredible balafon player there, had a few taster lessons and I bought his instrument from him and still play the same one today!
After a few years of loosely messing around on this instrument I started to take the balafon very seriously and was awarded a prestigious scholarship from The Finzi Trust, where I studied with one of the worlds leading virtuosos, Sory Diabate, a Guinean who lives in France. I have visited Senegal and Gambia many times, training with top masters and even staying with a family of balafon players and singers.
